

The patterned boundary surrounding the art area is an applied shading film. Opaque white is used throughout this art for small corrections and artistic effect. Note: This art is executed across two boards which are attached on the reverse with tape. We see our heroes among some of the incredibly twisted demonic creatures that the brilliant artistic collaborators bring to foul life.

On the right side we find Swamp Thing and Deadman, who are working with a who's who of DC supernatural heroes including John Constantine, Zatanna, the Demon Etrigan, the Phantom Stranger, Spectre and Doctor Fate who will descend into Hell itself to battle a horde of demons. On this magnificent page, Cain helps catch Abel up on the epic events unfolding as a way to also bring the reader up to speed. On the left side we find Cain and Abel, DC's mystery hosts, residents of what would later come to be known as "The Dreaming", and recent guest stars in the second episode of the Netflix Sandman series.

This gathering of supernatural heroes is actually considered to be the prototype for DC's Justice League Dark concept. This huge story brought together for the first time many of DC's mystic-themed heroes whose goal was to prevent reality from being taken down by demons from Hell. It was the multi-part, ultimate battle between Heaven and Hell that had been building in the award-winning title for months. This was the finale of 'American Gothic' which began in #37 with the introduction of John Constantine. This work appeared in Swamp Thing #50 (1986), the climactic chapter entitled "The End". Their style was uniquely suited for Alan Moore's singular writing style.

Bissette and Totleben established a unique, highly sophisticated look for Swamp Thing that incorporated influences ranging from the etchings of late 18th century artist Francisco Goya to EC horror master Graham Ingels and Swamp Thing co-creator Bernie Wrightson. This key Double Page Title Splash is the work of the legendary Swamp Thing team of artists, Stephen Bissette, John Totleben, Rick Veitch and of course, writer Alan Moore. With the recent announcement by DC Studios head James Gunn that a big budget Swamp Thing movie is in the works, there is renewed excitement around DC's beloved swamp monster.
