I started it but quickly found out it's not hard sci-fi, so I'll probably put it down. Banks just mentioning it so it won't get suggested. Two out of three main characters were Mary Sues and the story ended at the moment where it could actually get interesting. I've read House of Suns and found it very typical and by-the-numbers. And also the Rifters Trilogy, I think I've seen every single documentary about the deep ocean. Just found out that it's a part of "Firefall" series, I'll surely give it a try. Very interesting concepts and story and I actually remember most of the characters. I don't remember any characters - seems to be a recurring theme with hard sci-fi novels.īlindsight by Peter Watts. I've heard that the other books aren't as good, though. This one was quite interesting, if a bit slow. This one didn't have any interesting concepts either so I guess less of a disappointment than Timelike Infinity but also less hope that it gets better. Another one with uninteresting characters and bloated plot. It's a typical hard sci-fi, definitely not the best of Dukaj. Supposedly the first book in a yet-unwritten trilogy (though I doubt it). The characters were thin as paper, the plot could fit in a book 8 times shorter and the massive under-use of the main plot device (giant space-time portal) was just heart-breaking.
